Kandisky at work

I found this amazing video footage, from 1926, showing Wassily Kandisky drawing

I have never imagined him drawing or painting like this; in such a peaceful, elegant and well-thought manner, so it was quite a surprise. It is truly wonderful that almost a century later we can watch a video of him via a medium he could never have imagined its future existence!

Of all the arts, abstract painting is the most difficult. It demands that you know how to draw well, that you have a heightened sensitivity for composition and for color, and that you be a true poet. This last is essential. – Wassily Kandinsky

Wassily Kandinsky was a russian painter and theorist who lived between 1866 and 1944. He is known to be the first abstract painter (I would add ‘of modern times’). He started drawing and painting quite late, when he was already a university professor of law, at his 30s and the result was spectacular. His composition skills are particularly impressive.

Composition X, 1939. Oil on canvas, 130 x 195 cm. Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Dusseldorf.

I read somewhere that Kandinsky had a condition affecting the senses called synesthesia. It mixed his hearing with his sight which may well explain the beautiful music emanating from his paintings

The sound of colors is so definite that it would be hard to find anyone who would express bright yellow with bass notes or dark lake with treble… – Wassily Kandinsky
